Kenneth Harker
34 YOA
Sioux City, IA
October 3, 1996

Kenneth “Kenny” Harker, 34, of Sioux City, was last seen alive Thursday, Oct. 3, 1996. He’d suffered a head injury several year earlier that left him disabled, but was passionate about building motorcycles and living on his own with a dog he loved and took everywhere he went. On Saturday the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office found Kenny’s 1977 white Chevy Suburban parked on K-42’s gravel road, its doors open, tires flat and out of gas, and tagged it as an abandoned vehicle. That same day, Kenny missed a get-together with his mother, Marie Harker, who tried to reach him again on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Oct. 9, 1996, Marie let herself into Kenny’s home, where she found his unfed and unattended dog in distress as well as medications her son would never have left behind. She immediately contacted Sioux City police to report her son missing. The Australian shepherd was eventually returned to the woman who’d given Kenny the shepherd as a pup. Nine years after Kenny’s suspicious disappearance and suspected murder, the woman said the dog, his muzzle grayed and eyes and ears nearly gone with age, continued to perk his head as footsteps approached, still awaiting his best friend’s return.

  2. God Bless the Bentley Family says:

Some situations just seem to stay with people their whole lives. Linda’s situation is one such situation that has stayed with me. I didn’t know Linda, or her family members, but I very clearly remember the case. I was a High School Sophomore living in Sgt. Bluff at the time, and I was bothered that her murder was unsolved and that her family had never received the justice that they deserved. A few years after her death (1987, I think) an older step brother of mine told me that one of his friends told him that he had killed Linda. I wasn’t told to the entire conversation, only that he said he did it, which was horribly vague. I was living in Kansas City at the time that my brother told me this, and I contacted the Sioux City Police in an attempt to pass the information to someone. I knew at the time it was a stretch, hearsay, whatever, but I was compelled to bring the information forward in hopes that someone would follow the lead. I was told by the person on the phone that information from someone who heard something from someone who heard another person wasn’t the sort of lead that would be helpful in the case. I was thanked for my call and that was that. To this day, I believe that Loren Brown killed Linda Bentley. Not just because my older step brother said he confessed to it, but because Loren Brown was one of the creepiest people I have ever met, and I believe him capable of killing someone without remorse.

    • Fia says:

I was living in Sioux City when my sister in law told me about the little boy Manuel Ramirez’s death right when it happened. I’m no police officer but right away told her that I suspected he was murdered !!! How on earth did these officers fail to realize this at the time. A few years ago I’d read the biological father was locked up and the child lived with the stepmother and her kids. This woman got away with murder !!! And from what I understand she may have fled to Mexico. HOW’S ABOUT PUTTING A WARRANT OUT FOR THIS THING THAT MURDERED THIS INNOCENT CHILD. I raised 9 children and would have gladly taken in this child. My heart breaks thinking how this little boy was more likely being treated. Father gone, mother gone and left to someone who killed him. 😭😭😭😭😭😭 One can only pray there’s a heaven and the angels and God are with him.

    • Janet Rene Dilts says:

I think it was Dennis Beaver

  3. Staci Page says:

I am also curious why Ben Steffe – Sioux City – is not a cold case?

  4. John Doe says:

Anthony Lee Evans, I grew up in the neighborhood where he was killed in a hit in run. My best friends dad drove a white dodge pickup. My friends and I always wondered if he was the one that hit Anthony. I was only 12 at the time so we never really thought it was possible someone we knew could have done this. He was also a friend of law enforcement and medical personnel. He could have done it on accident and gotten away with it. He died in an accident himself shortly after so I believe this may be why this mystery has gone unsolved. I have absolutely know sure facts or proof so that is why I am leaving all names and addresses out. I always found it suspicious that this killing was not investigated or reported on further. Maybe him having friends in law enforcement helped keep this quite. But if you drive down St. Joe hill you can still see that little boys memorial and picture by the side of the road as far as I know. Very sad

  5. TKLEE says:

    Why hide your name hmmm
What you thru someone under the bus by names and if he did it it will be proven that’s why I didn’t state a name wow lol angry their?

  10. Doug h says:

I know Bernie and would not put it past him

    • Mary H says:

Bernie Bahmer was incarcerated during this time. Prayers to Linda’s family.

    • Angie B says:

Bernie was not able to do that, please understand that you also do not know him (I should know considering I’m very close to him), so please don’t defame another person based off of infactual rumors created by others and instead focus on Linda and her family- my hope and prayers to her and her family.

  11. Mary WEndt says:

Thank you for getting back to me, Jody. That case profoundly affected me also. I was two months shy of my 13th birthday at the time. Reading the full account 70 years later on-line brought the whole thing back! Those of us who believe in God know that justice will eventually be done even though they never caught the perpetrator. Or did they? I can’t image that the family wouldn’t know who did it, since this deranged person knew exactly where that baby was! Maybe someone in the family just quietly “took care of business.” and the police looked the other way. Anyway, please DO keep me posted

  12. James says:

If you belive this as a true statement I’ll show this too bunk I’m his nephue.I used to live next door to your mom as dad’s as a child in the 80’s and early 90s.so I know you know were he lives at my grandmas old house ask him yourself.

    • Laurie says:

Bunk had a good side and a bad side. He was always good to me. I would NOT want to get on his bad side however. I wouldn’t confront him. But, the side I knew would prevail and if he has any knowledge the guilt would be too much. If he does know something he should be a man and help.

  13. Jody Anderson says:

From wat I hear…Tony Canfield killer is behind bars…just arrested Robert Beaver in connection with it…well over due

  14. Diana Rader says:

You got the name right! Kelly Lynn Jackson. I met him at west high school…hanging around in the lunch hall in 1983. He did not go to our school, but his cousin David hayes did. I was see-ing Kelly for a spell and he tried to kill me after he rapped and beat me. He drove me in Davids car, through the back roads and into riverside park. He parked at the back(end) and beat me and choaked me in the car. He told me he just killed a bitch…and he knew how to get rid of the body. A car pulled into the park, down around where his car was parked. Kelly stopped long enough for me to get out of the car. He did talk me back into the car and we left. This is not the first time that he has tried to kill me. He was staying with his supposid cousin Mondell Plummer and his hooker girl…only down the hill and 3-4 blocks away from west high school. Just saying. Kelly was a son of a bitch…and evil!

  15. C Swingen\ says:

    How about Dave Post?

  16. Judy Recktenwald Pierce says:

did a search on this and found no information. I remember it because the baby was born and found around the time my son was born. I remember being in the hospital hearing about this. I always remember this baby and wondered if the baby was ever identified. How sad. I remember every year in March.

  17. John Plaschke says:

On March 27, 1974 a couple boys found a dead baby wrapped in bloody sheet
Umbilical cord attached was near I-29 hillside in west Sioux city

    • Tina Herfel says:

It is buried at logan cemetery in the baby heart. On the stone it says ” unknown baby boy” god have mercy on my parents! My sister and brother are buried up the hill from it. I remember the story welk

  18. Bruce Gunsolly Sr. says:

Thank you for keeping people informed on this difficult subject. I was wondering about a case I vaguely remember about a newborn that was thrown from the bluff by the veterans bridge. I believe it occurred in the 70s but it could have been the early 80s. Thanks again Bruce Gunsolly

  19. laurie says:

Brad have you seen the names Wade Tolle – Jimmy Merchant or Larry Sullivan? They were mentioned in a post on the “wolverines” facebook page. Story is, Wade Tolle was talking about it at a house party awhile back.

    • Doug h says:

Don’t be talking shit about wade , I’ve know him an ran with him most my life and he is a gentle soul.

      • Laurie says:

Excuse me…(I) wasn’t “talking shit” on anybody. If you’d read the post correctly…it says that “someone” on the Wolverine Facebook page posted those three names. I was just making sure that the info was passed on. No apologies from me in trying to possibly help.

      • Brad Bentley says:

        Tread lightly bud.

      • Brad Bentley says:

What is your full name Doug?

        • Brian says:

I worked with Larry Sullivan in the early 90’s right after he got out of the joint he was a mean drunk and would brag about the people he beat and gotten away with so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he knows something.

  20. Lennie s says:

I was a classmate of Linda at west high. I don’t have any info on what happened to her, but i just wanted to say i still & have often thought of her over the years. I myself think there was foul play despite what any medical examiner says. i want to say my prayers are with Linda’ s family then & now. don’t ever stop hoping or looking for the truth.

  21. My uncle was killed in 1961 in a hit and run accident. They have not found the person that killed him. How would I go about getting his case listed as a cold case?

    • Jody Ewing says:

Thank you for writing, Allyson. Please just email whatever details you have on the case to me (jody at iowacoldcases.org) and I’ll check into it. Please try to be as specific as possible — things like his full name, date and location (address) of crime, circumstances surrounding the hit and run, and names of any investigators you might remember having worked the case.

I’m so sorry for your loss and look forward to hearing from you again soon.

    Char matousek
I just left you a message on facebook.

  24. Char matousek says:

Jody, you really should dig deeper into the Linda Bentley case. My husband was involved in her case and went to his grave knowing she had been murdered. He kept her file and handed it off to an attorney friend when he retired from his job. Had cancer not moved in on him I believe he would have worked with all he had to find her killer. Her autopsy was botched so bad that the state had to agree with the local coroner.

  25. Mary Wendt says:

Jody, Did you ever write that book about the Donna Sue Davis case? I just ran across that case the other day and well remember it, even though I was only 12 when it happened. I can still remember the attitude of fear and rage that summer.

    • Jody Ewing says:

Mary, I’m not sure if the title will remain the same, but I do have an agent now and rather than write the book in third person (from a journalistic viewpoint) my agent proposed I tell the story in a more memoir-type fashion about how my obsession with Donna Sue Davis’ unsolved murder catapulted me into a whole new lifelong journey I continue to passionately explore. The book will profile a few other cases, but the overall theme addresses the lessons in life I’ve learned along this journey. The book should be finished by September and I will keep you posted as to its status. Thanks for asking!

Your sister went missing the same night as a significant event in my life occurred, and I’ve always connected the two incidents in my head. I just want you to know that 30+ years later, that someone she never met still thinks of her and prays for her soul.

      • Judy Bentley says:

Thank you Rhonda for the prayers. I am Linda’s big sister and just today reading these posts. I will keep you in my prayers going forward too. God bless you.

  29. Bruce Evans says:

What about Anthony Lee Evans. 2000 hit and run in Sioux city

  30. Jeff Bentson says:

You don’t have the case of Linda Bently on your Cold Cases. She was a 17 yo West High student who went missing in Sioux City in 1984. Her car was found stuck in mud about 2 blocks from her home with her purse still in it. She was returning from a party or a dance. Her body was found about a month later after an exhaustive search of the Riverside area where her house was. She was found in the Big Sioux River. Police have always suspected foul play.

    • Jody Ewing says:

Jeff, we’ve had a number of inquiries in the past about Linda’s death, but her case’s official classification is an accidental drowning. Dr. Thomas Corridon, the medical examiner, concluded Linda had a high BAC and there was water in her lungs. She was found fully clothed, and there was no evidence of any type of assault. Many didn’t want to believe Linda had drowned, and a forensic pathologist was called in from Des Moines to conduct a second autopsy. He, too, concluded Linda had not been assaulted and that cause of death was accidental drowning.

I spoke with Sioux City police Lt. (now Capt.) Lisa Claeys about Linda’s case back in May 2004, and she confirmed the official ruling. People have posed different theories and suppositions to police over the years, and though investigators have followed up on every single one, nothing has turned up to alter the official classification. Pending some type of solid evidence to prove otherwise, Linda’s case remains classified as an accidental drowning.

Thank you for asking about her. Her untimely death deeply affected her many friends and loved ones.

      • Jeff Bentson says:

Thanks Jody for the reply, and thank you and your staff for the wonderful work you have done here.

        • brad bentley says:

Jeff Bentson, who are you and how do you know my sister?

          • Jeff Bentson says:

Brad I never knew Linda. I remember her case because I volunteered as did several people to search for her after her disappearance. Sorry I got the dates wrong. I was 15 when she went missing and helped to search War Eagle Park and Riverside Park with friends. We were organized by the SCPD. Sorry for your families loss, hope you all will find justice for her some day. I am currently a Sioux City Fire Fighter stationed at Station 8 in Riverside. God Bless

      • William Moore says:

I don’t care what the police say….no way would Linda drown in the big sioux…..I knew Linda my whole life, she could swim like a fish….anyone from riverside knew that the unpaved dirt road her car was found stuck in …was not a road to drive on at that time of the year…why would Linda go to the big sioux and go swimming fully clothed in late fall……she was an honor student, just signed a letter of intent to play Div 1 volleyball for Iowa State…..why would she get stuck then walk blocks opposite the direction she lived,to going swimming in late fall???

        • William Moore says:

Sorry. Early spring after the snow melt

          • Ash says:

Unfortunately she had a high BAC which could have caused her to drive on a road people normally would not. That would also explain why she most likely went into the water and drowned. We will never know what was going through her mind or what she was thinking while under the influence.

            • Bradley Bentley says:

Ash…you are so far off with your comments, you haven’t a clue what happened that night, I do.

            • Bradley Bentley says:

Ash, I am still peeved at your comments. You have no idea what you are talking about. Linda was definitely murdered that night. The autopsy was botched and NOT accurate. More than one person was involved in the murder. My family has information that points to at least three people as suspects. There could be more individuals involved as well or at the very least knows how it happened. The river is not right next to where her car was found either. She did not just wander down there…that is just ignorant. They took her to the river.

            • Tklee says:

There’s no way in hell that Linda would’ve went down to the big suit the Linda would have went down to the big zoo river and got into the river where she was adding to the river where she was let alone being hard lick accessible to anybody it’s earlier accessible to anybody I saw her that night I saw her that night there’s no way in hell she went into that water. I’d like to know the exact number on the BACThey consider anything over a point 08 high blood alcohol levelShe was only blocked from home. They can say what they want that was back in the days of let’s rule it a accident instead of investing what really happened.

    • brad bentley says:

Your date of 1984 is wrong. Linda Bentley’s death was: Apr. 27, 1983 as marked on her headstone and she most likely was killed the night she disappeared, I believe it was March 5th, 1983. There was foul play by the way, people have contacted my family claiming they know what happened but have no evidence to prove it.

      • Dawn harmes says:

I knew it was 83. Couldn’t figure out why everything keep saying 84. It was just a few months before graduation.

        • Macheal K says:

It was her prom night everybody, I remember it very well becuz she was going to run home grab a few things then they were all heading to an after prom party…I was a junior and my significant other was a senior and yes it was 1983!! I was told (hearsay that’s why I’ve never said anything) that Bunk Beavers is the one who murdered her then threw her body in the river

      • DeNise Bailey says:

I know she went to 711 after her car got stuck and 2 guys said they would help her I believe they were Bruce and Bill Solomon

    • Gwendolyn says:

Linda was my grandmother’s cousin. I was 2 years old when this happened. Grandma talked about it all the time and told me over and over again that a suspect’s family had called the Bentley house and told them to “keep their mouths shut” and to “watch out” and “they might end up dead”. Grandma passed in 2002 so I can’t ask her who the suspect was. I’m itching to solve this. I’m also looking for a picture of linda. If anyone has one please send it to gwensberg@gmail.com

    • Jeff Cross says:

any info on a name an number to contact to do a identification examiner

    • Tracy Lee says:

I was at the same dance and a friend of Linda’s. I remember that night like it was yesterday. There were a lot of rumors and suspicion surrounding two people but they put the case under wraps and tried to say she was walking d I wn by the river and fell in I say BS to that I know someone killed her.

      • Brad Bentley says:

Tracy Lee, please contact me on facebook.
        Thanks

        • Deb Wetrosky Sherar says:

I hope your family is healing. I remember this case very well.

        • Rhonda Dunlap says:

Brad I don’t know if you remember me my maiden name was Rhonda Frye. I moved to Texas when Linda & I we’re in high school right after my freshman year. I used to babysit the first set of twins you had. I loved your family and have thought of Linda often over the years. I too believe foul play. I never bought the whole story of her driving down that road and “accidentally drowning “. That’s just bs. I did hear rumor of someone that was on police radar for it. I won’t put a name here.

    • Janice Engelkes says:

This is a case I have always had suspicions about since it happened. I was a victim of one of the people who are of interest in this case. At the time I was assaulted and left for dead on the hills above Riverside Blvd, when it was reported it was “covered” up as well. I learned through the years that the one who aasaulted me was a major drug dealer in Riverside along with other crimes. I don’t know what hold he has over authorities or if he does anymore. I do know people felt “sorry” for him and an accident he was in as a very young child. That’s neither here nor there, he’s a monster of the worst kind who will never be held accountable for his actions.

      • Brad Bentley says:

Can you contact me on Facebook messenger?

      • TKLEE says:

        Is his initials BB

        • Janice Engelkes says:

Actually they’re DB but he is known as BB

        • No ur business says:

why hide ur comments unless hiding something!!! Denise Beavers…. REALLY prove it!!! Don’t talk behind backs!!!

          • TKLEE says:

First off Linda was my friend back off I’ll say anything I want and that may prove relevant to this case so if you have an issue to bad

            • James says:

I would strongly suggest watching what you state on my uncle Dennis bunk beavers you don’t have to dance around his name I’m his nephew, if I continue to see this bullshit on his name I have the means as I am very wealthy my money is long to pull this site get all of your real names and sue for defamation of character. Try me to see if I’m playing around

              • Irrelevant says:

Threatening people for discussing aspects of a case is a big reason cases like this one and so many others go unsolved. People with ‘money’ who think they can do as they please and silence people and cover things up and make them all go away. Shame on you James.

                • James says:

On all aspects he has never been charged our always cleared so anything on his name without proof is defamation of character those are facts not threats, threats are non factual I am not silencing nothing but defamation, cover up lol How can you cover up something your cleared of wtf shame on you people for not haveing factual evidence Learn the law. And I stand by my above comment
