Joseph Ernest Payne, 72, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 1945, after several young boys broke into his Chariton home Saturday, Oct. 13, tied him up and beat him repeatedly in efforts to get Payne to “confess” where he stashed his money. Payne managed to escape and was found the following afternoon seated on a truck’s running board parked in the Dannen elevator shed near the railroad tracks. Pneumonia set in and Payne was transferred to the Baker Nursing Home. He awakened only momentarily on Oct. 17, stating “Please don’t be too hard on the boys” before passing away around noon.

On Monday evening, August 29, 1960, Dorothy Coon was found dead in a ditch alongside a road in Lucas County, Iowa, 12 miles north of Chariton. Her body — clad in a dark green dress and white shoes — was discovered by a farmer mowing weeds. Mrs. Coon’s purse was found one mile away.

On November 11, 1966, a man’s skeletal remains were found near the Rock Island Railroad tracks one and three quarters of a mile south of Chariton, Iowa. Papers and a wallet adjacent to the remains identified the body as that of Fred Sanders, a World War II veteran.
