Althoff, a lifelong baseball player, had graduated just one year earlier from the University of Dubuque with a degree in sports management.
Althoff, who lived in Eldridge but grew up in La Motte, was walking on 300th Street near Zwingle when an unidentified vehicle struck him and then drove away. A passerby found Althoff’s body early Sunday morning, July 21, 2002.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office called in the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to assist with the investigation.
The sheriff’s office said the vehicle could be a truck or a “jacked up” car that sits higher in the air.
In a May 2003 interview with KWWL TV reporter Melissa Schisler, a spokesman from the DCI said that due to a lack of leads in a long time, the case was sent back to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.
Scott M. Althoff was born October 3, 1978, in Dubuque, to Ron and Carol (Pancratz) Althoff.
Scott was an avid baseball player all his life. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1997, where he played baseball and was named Honorable Mention on the all-area baseball team. In 2001, he graduated from the University of Dubuque with a degree in sports management. During college, he served an internship with the Quad-City River Bandits. For many years, he played ball with the Zwingle Suns (No. 23) and earned many honors. He also pitched for the South Team in the Semi Pro All Star Game. He was a former 4-H member and also was an altar server. He worked, most recently, for Marvin and More Windows, Davenport.
Family members and friends described Scott as a great outgoing person always willing to help with his infectious smile and dedication to hard work.
Scott died Sunday, July 21, 2002, near Zwingle from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run.

Visitation was held from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory in Dubuque, with a wake service conducted there at 2 p.m.
Survivors include his parents, Ron and Carol Althoff, La Motte; brothers, Marty (Jenny) Althoff, Marion, Iowa, Greg Althoff, Ames, Iowa, and Brian “B.J.” Althoff, La Motte; nephews, Ryan and Andy Althoff; maternal grandmother, Monica Pancratz, Dubuque; and paternal grandmother, Aileen Althoff, La Motte.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Kenneth Pancratz, on June 22, 2002; and paternal grandfather, Al Althoff, on Sept. 20, 1992.
