DCI Case # 62-01063
November 16, 1962

Case information provided by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation

On Friday, November 16, 1962, Anna Maria Medici was killed in a hit-and-run shortly after a co-worker dropped her off at the edge of Highway 69 in Carney, Iowa. The 21-year-old was then hit by another vehicle that also kept going, and then two more vehicles, which stopped at the scene.

Anna’s mother, Maria Medici, who had been standing at the window waiting for her daughter to return home, witnessed what happened to her daughter and was able to provide some information to authorities.

Anna Medici is buried at Saint Marys Cemetery in Highland Park, Lake County, Illinois.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s Cold Case Unit, which operated from 2009 – 2011, investigated Anna’s case as one they hoped to solve using latest advancements in DNA technology.

On their (now defunct) Cold Case Unit website, they’d reported that on November 30, 1962, evidence thought to belong to the victim was removed from the drive shaft of a 1961 Pontiac registered to a man from Ankeny, Iowa.

Although federal grant funding for the Cold Case Unit was exhausted in December 2011, the DCI continues to assign agents to investigate cold cases as new leads develop or as technological advances allow for additional forensic testing of original evidence.

The DCI remains committed to resolving Iowa’s cold cases and will continue to work diligently with local law enforcement partners to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice for the victims and their families.

Both of Anna’s parents — Maria and Pietro Medici — died without seeing their daughter’s killer brought to justice.

Pietro died later the same year Anna was killed, and Maria passed away in 2005.

Anna and her parents are all buried at Saint Marys Cemetery in Highland Park, Lake County, Illinois.
