Thomas DeWayne “Ernie” Adkins, a 29-year-old foundry worker from Fairfield, Iowa, was shot in the head at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 1985, by his friend Robert Alan Tisor, 24, while the two were out hunting in the Van Buren Wildlife Area, a 480-acre state-owned wilderness area northwest of Douds. Tisor claimed he mistook Adkins for a squirrel. After medics transported Adkins to University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Tisor took off in Adkins’ car and was gone for hours as he cleaned out the vehicle.
