Deputy Louis H. Dayton, 57, was collecting evidence behind the Hallett Building in Spencer, Iowa, regarding illegal liquor manufacturing when he was attacked and beaten on Wednesday, March 20, 1929. Deputy Dayton managed to return to the rooming house where he stayed, and succumbed to his injuries about two hours later. His assailant was never apprehended.

Mervin Walvatne was reported missing to the Spencer, IA, Police Department by his sister on December 16, 1990. Walvatne’s sister, who lives in Spencer, became concerned after not seeing her brother since July 18. They’d previously had regular phone contact.
