Terry Lee Page, 36, of Burlington, Iowa, was shot and killed outside his 1205 Franklin Street residence on the edge of North Hill in the early morning hours Tuesday, June 25, 2013.

Police said they were called to the home about 5 a.m., where they found Page dead at the scene in the home’s back yard. He’d died from a single gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Page’s live-in girlfriend, Tammy Lewis, said she found him dead sometime between 5 and 5:15 a.m.

Police called the death suspicious and later ruled it a homicide.

Lt. Adam Schaefer, a Burlington police spokesman, identified the dead man as Terry Lee Page, who lived at the 1205 Franklin St. home where the body was found.

According to a Hawk Eye report published June 26, 2013, the house is off Osborn Street and is listed for sale. Tammy Lewis rented the home and lived there with Page and her two small children, the Hawk Eye said.

Burlington police issued a brief statement that afternoon, saying “On Tuesday, June 25, at approximately 5:01 a.m., Burlington police responded to the 1200 block of Franklin Street regarding a possible deceased male located in the area,” Schaefer said in the release. “Upon arrival, officers located Page (behind the residence). He was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The press release didn’t mention who had called police or who may have been home at the residence at that time.

By afternoon, several uniformed officers were stationed around the home, including several detectives, Des Moines County Attorney Pat Jackson and assistant county attorney Ty Rogers.

DCI crime lab members stayed at the scene for several hours Tuesday afternoon and into the evening, the Hawk Eye reported.

After Page’s autopsy in Iowa City on Wednesday, June 26, Lt. Jeff Klein, chief of Burlington’s criminal investigation division, said the autopsy had determined the cause of death, although Klein declined to state what type of weapon the suspect used in the slaying.

Patrol officers, stationed at the residence for more than 24 hours, removed the crime scene tape and left the area after the autopsy’s completion.

“At this point, we are not discounting anyone as a suspect,” Klein said in a Hawk Eye story published Friday, June 28. “We are still gathering information, but we have received nothing that points us in a specific direction.”

Klein said detectives from Burlington and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation interviewed numerous people about the killing.

“We are well into double digits,” Klein said of the number of people questioned. “We have had a few sporadic tips (since the homicide), and we are following up on all of them.”

Klein declined to say whether or not police had recovered the murder weapon, whether they’d determined a motive or who may have been at the residence the morning of Page’s murder.

“We are still trying to determine the circumstances surrounding his death,” he said.

Results from search warrants — obtained Tuesday for the home and for vehicles parked near the crime scene’s vicinity — did not result in any arrests by Wednesday, and the search warrant’s results had not been returned to Des Moines County District Court by late Thursday.

Don’t have any new leads to follow

In a Burlington Hawk Eye story published Tuesday, July 16, 2013, Lt. Klein said the department didn’t have any new leads to follow.

“We’ve followed up on every lead that has come in, but at this point we are in a stalled position,” he said.

A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case.
