Michael William Reed, 19, of 43 20th Ave. SW in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids on Friday, April 17, 1998.
Reed’s mother, Deb (Peal) Evans, told Iowa Cold Cases that police believed her son’s death was a suicide, but that it is well known around [Cedar Rapids] what really happened to her son. Those involved, Evans said, never have been brought to justice.
On a Facebook page created in his memory, Evans said her son achieved many things in his short life and will forever and always be loved and missed.
Michael had a daredevil and devilish side to him, but was full of life and energy, the site says.
The family continues to search for answers in his death.
Michael William Reed was born in Cedar Rapids on March 14, 1979, the son of Michael W. Reed and Deborah (Peal) Reed.
He attended Prairie Elementary, Prairie Intermediate, Prairie Junior High, Prairie High School, Metro High School, and graduated from Denison Job Corps on August 29, 1997.
“Michael was a bright and intelligent young man and added joy and sunshine to many lives,” his Facebook memorial page states. “He was very loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his family.”
Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, with the Reverend Jack Hooten of the Sharon United Methodist Church officiating. Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
Pallbearers were Tony Reed, Terry Reed, Dusty Hatcher, Mike Flaack, Don Peal and Trevor Noggle.
