Case Details

Marques Cotton, 29, of Peoria, Illinois, was fatally shot during an R&B concert at the Hotel Davenport and Conference Center, 5202 N. Brady St., early on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017.

Davenport police were called to the area about 12:52 a.m. for a report of shots fired
and possible gunshot victims, according to a Quad-Cities Times article dated Feb. 12, 2017.

According to a news release, police found two men with suspected gunshot wounds. Both men were taken to Genesis Medical Center-East Rusholme Street, where Cotton was pronounced dead.

The second man was treated and released.

R&B artist Jacquees had been scheduled to perform at the hotel on Feb. 11., but concertgoers said he never showed up, according to a Feb. 12 report by WQAD.com.

After learning of Cotton’s death, Jacquees posted on his Facebook page, “Im covered in his name. Amen.”

No arrests have been made in this homicide.

About Marques Lewis-Cotton (from obituary)

Marques Sebastian Allen Lewis-Cotton was born on July 3, 1987, in Peoria, IL, to Asa Lewis Sr. and Rosetta (Cotton) Hardimon.

He passed away on February 12, 2017, at Genesis Hospital in Iowa City at age 29.

Marques was very family-oriented and loved telling jokes to make people laugh. He also loved all sports.

Survivors included his parents, Rosetta (Ezell) Hardimon of Peoria and Asa (Jamie) Lewis Sr. of Georgia; two sons, Marques Cotton Jr., and De’Cymeon Cotton, both of Peoria; four daughters: Mar’Tajah Cotton, Kah’Lyce Nunn, Kennedee Cotton, and Kylee Cotton all of Peoria, seven brothers, Kelvin Patterson Jr., Asa (Katie) Lewis Jr., Lamar Formon all of Peoria, Darnell (Victoria) Lewis, Tyrie Lewis, and Isiah Mathew Lewis, all of Georgia, and RaMonte May of Peoria, four sisters: Tandra Cotton, Demesha Cotton, Nakieya Cotton of Peoria, Asia Lewis- Bussdieker of Detroit, and Alexis Lewis of Chicago; grandparents William Lewis Jr. of Chicago and Jacqueline Warren of Peoria, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John Graham and Mary Delaney, and two daughters.

Services were held on Monday, February 20, 2017, at Church of the Living God Temple 130 at noon, with visitation two hours prior.

Vice Chief Bishop Leroy Smith served as host Pastor, with Pastor Otha Boyd Sr. officiating.

Marques was laid to rest in Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria, Peoria County, Ill.
