UPDATE — Iowa sex offender who went missing in 2008 arrested in Mississippi

On Oct. 26, 2018, a man who had allowed Lee Allan Rolfe to live on his Slidell, Louisiana property for more than ten years contacted Iowa Cold Cases to advise that Rolfe had been arrested on an outstanding warrant when Rolfe suffered an injury while working on the property owner’s farm. Rolfe had gone to a hospital across the border in Mississippi, where he provided his real name to personnel there. When the hospital pulled Rolfe’s records, they realize he was wanted in Clayton County, Iowa, on a “fail to register as a sex offender” registration and contacted authorities.

When the hospital pulled up Rolfe’s records, they realize he was wanted in Clayton County, Iowa, on a “fail to register as a sex offender” registration.

It is believed the hospital on October 25, 2018, contacted the Pearl River County Sheriff’s department in Mississippi, who in turn contacted the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office in Iowa. Rolfe was subsequently taken into custody on the outstanding warrant and extradited to the Clayton County.

Pearl River County is less than an hour’s drive northeast from Slidell.

The land owner, who did provide his name to Iowa Cold Cases, said the whole thing caught him by surprise, because he had never once in the 10 years Rolfe lived on his property seen Rolfe display any type of activity related to the charges of which Rolfe had been accused.

The homeowner described Rolfe as a quiet man who worked hard and earned his keep and never bothered anyone in Louisiana’s Slidell, part of the New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner Statisfical Area. The whole thing had come as a shock to him, he said. He said in the 10 years Rolfe had lived on his property, he had never seen any incidence of impropriety.

The property owner told Iowa Cold Cases he had no idea that when [Rolfe] arrived 10 years ago looking for work, that Rolfe was wanted back in Iowa for violating terms of his sentencing by failing to register as a sex offender. For the last 10 years, the land owner said, Rolfe had been an upstanding citizen and that he never once thought his new tenant — whom he allowed to live in a trailer on the property — was wanted for any kind of criminal activity in Iowa.

He must have worked for cash all the while or his social security number activity would have alerted authorities.

This guy sometimes stayed in a camper right behind my trailer. Basically, the cops came and asked “Are you Lee Allan Rolfe?” He said “Sure am!” and then they said “Are you from Iowa?” He said “Sure am!” Then they said “do you know why we’re here?” He said “Sure do!”, turned around, put his hands behind his back.

  3. JASON says:

i knew him under an alias for about the last 8 years and i hope that he can patch his life back togeather and move past all of this and reconnect with his family,he was a good man and while i cant speak for what crimes he was convicted of ……the man i knew for 8 years was an all around good fellow…………. i just cant place him doing anything like what they said he did(((((((im not saying he is innocent or didnt commit a crime)))))) the man was very docile and ive never even herd him say a cuss word or even get mad about anything. il just say some prayers for him because i know there is good in him.

Jody, thanks for the information. I like that his name was flagged. It was someone that we starting doing at the VA, wen we went computerized. it also helped eliminate the problem of certain patients tweaking their prescriptions to get stronger pain medications.

I wonder how he was located.

    • Jody Ewing says:

Patrick, he suffered an injury while working and needed to go to the hospital, where he gave hospital personnel his real name. A system was in place where it flagged his name and they recognized a warrant was out for Rolfe’s arrest and contacted local officials.
