Kevin Richard Jack, a pit crew member of the Andy Cook stock car racing team, died in a hit-and-run motor vehicle fatality in Davenport, Iowa, on Saturday, June 15, 2002.

Police said the 21-year-old was found lying in the roadway in the 5700 block of North Pine Street around 2:20 a.m.

About 10 hours earlier, he’d been shooting pool at favorite Davenport bar.

Doctors at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport, pronounced Jack DOA.

According to a Quad-City Times article published July 11, 2002, the criminal investigation division and traffic accident investigation unit worked to piece together Jack’s movements and those with whom he spoke prior to the hit-and-run.

“We have some ideas about his movements that Friday night and early Saturday morning,” Davenport police Capt. David Struckman told the Times. “We’re trying to talk to people who can confirm our ideas and corroborate some of the other information we have.”

Detectives investigated Jack’s death as a hit-and-run motor vehicle fatality, but had many unanswered questions, including whether Jack fell from the back of a pickup truck or was hit by a car or died by other means.

The victim had consumed alcohol before his death but had not been driving. An autopsy indicated he died of multiple internal injuries, but investigators never received enough concrete information to identify a suspect or a car in the case.

In June 2004, his family offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in his death.

According to Jack’s mother, Laurie Jack, the 2002 Sturgis event was taking place when her son died, and the family hoped that someone back in town for the 2004 event might be familiar with her son’s movements that night.

“We would like to know what happened,” Laurie Jack told the Quad-City Times in an article dated June 14, 2004.

The family distributed fliers about Jack’s death at area bars, grocery stories, and other businesses, and hoped the reward would encourage someone to come forward.

In 2005, Laurie and her husband, Marvin Jack of Davenport, put out fliers once again and held a small candlelight vigil, but also had other views about their son’s multiple internal injuries.

“We think maybe Kevin now was beat up and there was more than one person involved,” she said in a Quad-City Times article published June 17, 2005. “Somebody knows something out there. All it needs is one piece of the puzzle.”
