At dawn on June 13, 1933, the body of 38-year-old Fred Milton Hollingsworth was discovered in his car on the shoulder of the Lincoln Highway near the intersection of a gravel road four miles east of Ames. He had been killed by a blast to the face from a double-barreled shotgun.

On November 8, 1948, after returning home and parking his car outside his house, 55-year-old Henry Chavis was shot in the arm and mid-back after exiting his vehicle, and then, while lying on the ground, was executed with a final bullet that entered at his throat and exited the back of his head.

January 26, 1968

On January 28, 1968, the deceased body of Sheila Jean Collins was found in a ditch on a gravel road four miles east and one-quarter mile south of Nevada, Iowa. Miss Collins — an Iowa State University coed who was headed home for the weekend — had been strangled with a nylon cord knotted around her neck.

On March 13, 1983, the body of a newborn infant was found in Story County.

August 10, 2004

On August 10, 2004, a white male's badly decomposed body was discovered several hundred yards behind the Southbound Interstate 35 rest area north of Ames in a wooded location. DNA tests later identified the body as that of Chad James Schwab, 30, of Snowmass, Colo., though the state Medical Examiner's Office and the Story County Sheriff's Office ruled the cause of death undetermined.
