Cold Cases in Mapleton, IA

Homicide
George Earl Dean
Mapleton, IA (Monona County)
Case # 6600722
June 19, 1966

George Earl Dean was found deceased in the street in front of his home in Mapleton. Dean had fractured facial bones and fractured ribs on the left side. The victim may have been struck by a car.

It was investigated that Dean could have been having an affair with Mrs. Carley. On the night of Dean's death Mrs. Carley drove past the Dean residence and was stopped by George Dean, who she said asked her to go call a doctor because he was sick. Mrs. Carley stated that she proceeded to Mr. Knife's home, called a doctor, and returned to Dean's home.

William Gregorson was awakened on June 30, 1966, by Mrs. Carley, in which she requested that he drive her to Omaha to see her husband because she was being questioned about the death of Dean and wanted her husband present. Gregorson obliged but asked why he would have to drive and she responded by saying she did not like driving in Omaha.

Upon questioning by officials, Mr. Gregorson stated that Mrs. Carley told him that she was stopped by Dean and was asked to go call a doctor, that she then went back to her own home to call, and then went back to the Dean residence where she found George Dean dead.
