I know of at least 2 unsolved murders that you don’t have on your website. The first one is Norman Juhl,a Keokuk,Iowa police officer. He was shot by an unknown assailant while working in (I believe) 1949.
The second is the daughter and son-in-law of Des Moines County Sheriff Quick. They were found shot to death in their car at the railroad depot in Ft.Madison,Ia. in the late 60′s or early 70′s.

Thank you so much for writing and letting us know about the other unsolved murders. We’re still building our list, and this is exactly how we usually find out about those we don’t yet have listed. If you have any further info you’d like to send along, please do so. And, I’ll get to work researching them so we get them added asap! Thanks again!

Mike, I’ve just discovered that Norman Juhl’s case has actually been solved. Lloyd Woodson confessed, was charged with second-degree murder, and currently is serving a life sentence. This link details his appeal to the Eight Circuit US Court of Appeals (and its denial):

And this link — http://www.odmp.org/officer/7302-patrolman-norman-juhl — also states at the end that the suspect was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Mike: In March, 1969, Robert and Bonnie Quick Swanson were newlyweds and were driving back from Burlington to New Orleans after their wedding. Their car was found abandoned at the train depot in Fort Madison. Their bodies were found in southern Missouri a few months later. Missouri law enforcement stated they were seen alive in that state, so the murders did not occur in Iowa. They are a Missouri cold case. Thanks for your inquiry. Nancy Bowers

Thank you for correcting me on the Norman Juhl case.I was always under the impression that someone got away with the murder of a police officer. Its good to know that this is NOT an unsolved crime!

Burlington seems to have several unsolved homides. One that stands out in my mind is Diane.I can’t remember what her last name was,but at one time she lived in Keokuk and was married to Ken “Chick” Billings and had two sons. She was divorced from Chick and had remarried. She was found shot to death in her home in Burlington. This happened 3 or 4 years ago and the Burlington police sort of swept it under the rug.I’m assuming they didn’t put much effort into solving her murder because she was in an interracial relationship.

Thank you for letting me know that this is considered a Missouri murder case.I’ve often wondered about this case.I know that Sherriff Quick worked the case as if it was a Des Moines county case, questioning everyone that he came into contact with.It has to be heartbreaking for him and the rest of his family not knowing who is responsible for murdering his daughter.

Hi Nancy, I remember this quite well as I grew up in New London and that is where Bobby Swanson and the family grew up also. We were all quite saddened and shocked to say the least by the outcome of events. I would have thought for sure that some sort of evidence would have surfaced by now.
