In early March of 1898, the body of Fremont County resident Mrs. Clara N. Gray, 22, was found on the bank of the East Nishnabotna River at the bottom of a steep slope along a railroad track. She was last seen at the Red Oak train station in Montgomery County on February 28. The coroner’s jury could not establish the cause of death, but concluded it appeared suspicious.
