On Sunday, October 24, 1905, Officer Pitt McClellan Doxie, 34, was working the night patrol in Independence. At 1:00 a.m., he encountered burglars at the W.H. Little Clothing Store. Shots were exchanged and Officer Doxie went down with severe leg injuries; his assailants escaped. Doxie died at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 1905.
