At 8:00 a.m. on Valentine’s Day of 1998, a body was spotted through the cold fog lying along the bike path on Birdland Drive near 6th Avenue not far from the Des Moines River.

When police arrived, they identified the dead man as 20-year-old Des Moines resident Ky Van Luong. He was shot to death and his body dumped.

Sixth and Birdland area in Des Moines where the bodies of Susan Hagen and Ky Van Luong were found within two days of each other in 1998.

Two days before, the burned body of 44-year-old Susan Hagen was found a short distance away under the 2nd Avenue Bridge over the Des Moines River.

Police do not believe the two homicides were connected. Both remain unsolved.
