In early October of 1874, 30-year-old Henry J. Millard was found dead inside the house where he lived alone in Camp Township of Polk County southeast of Des Moines.

He died from two bullet wounds.

There were no clues or suspects, and the murder has not been solved.

Henry J. Millard was born in 1844 in the state of New York. On August 21, 1862, he enlisted in Company B, Iowa 23rd Infantry Regiment and was mustered out on July 28, 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi, a few weeks after the decisive battle there.
