I graduated from Albia High School with this girl in 1965. I thought I knew her. But, looking at the picture, I don't remember her. I can't locate the yearbook yet, but she must have made some big changes in her appearance after graduating. Keep an eye on Andre. Is he in good health? Maybe he's the kind to make a deathbed confession when his health goes. Maybe his buddies have already thought of that.

As a resident of Iowa and as a mother of 3, I am appalled by the number of child deaths here. I have signed up for Amber Alerts on my cell, I have identification kits for my own children should the unthinkable happen... but the safety of my children begins and ends at home, as far as I am concerned. One day, a neighbor's kid showed up at our house uninvited. He played in the yard w/ my kids, said his mom knew where he was, was there for about 45 minutes before I had to leave for the store. As I went to my car a police car drove by, stopped, asked if all the children with me were my kids. Turns out, the boy's mother didn't know where he was, and he hadn't been home for hours, which I found amazing as he only lived half a block away. My point in telling this is that if I had been anyone with ill intentions this boy could have become one of the kids here. It can happen to anyone, and the only way to stop it is by being vigilant. Where are your children?

Lee Andre and I were in the same class at Lincoln High School. I've not had any contact with Lee after graduation in 1961. I now live in Bakersfield California.

I first heard about the loss of Alice Mae Van Alstine, not by name but as Lee Andre's wife, about 40 years after graduation. I was relaying the story, as I had heard it, to an acquaintance here in Bakersfield. My acquaintance told me that he had heard the story before from a co-worker that is a relative of Alice.

I post this comment so that I would check the box for followup e-mails.

Comment on Ruthie Pohlmeier-Kingery: Can a Family Find Justice a Second Time? by Alice Kingary

It was confirmed that Sam and Ruthie’s murders were not related; maybe one day we will believe that. It was suggested that Ruthie knew her murderer and quite possibly her death was an accident. If this is the case, haven’t you suffered enough without a moment’s peace wondering when you will be caught? Please come forward and find peace of mind.

If this is not the case and it was cold blooded murder without any thought for her or those she would leave behind, I pray for justice on this earth which is far less intense than that of eternity. If you are relaxed enough to believe you have gotten away with murder, please know, you haven’t. No one can escape the final Judge.

Please, if you [or someone who knows you] know anything of the circumstances in her death come forward and bring some sort of closure for her family.

I hope one day very soon that Valerie's killer will be brought to justice and punished to the fullest extent of the law. I'm so very sorry for Ms. Meier and the lifelong suffering that she and her family has endured.

Thanks so much for your comment, Teri. I'm an Iowa mom too, and know exactly what you mean. Most of us couldn't imagine facing a single day with what Carolyn and Erin's family have had to face for thousands of those days. As time marches by and friends and neighbors wonder if to speak or what to say, yours convey it all: I remember. I care. They are healing words. Thank you again for writing.

For what it is worth to Erin's family and friends, I remember. I care.

I am just an Iowa mom, who can only imagine the horror of not knowing where a precious child is.

I offer prayers that someday you will have answers.

if you left more accurate information about how she was murdered, times, any witnesses, things like this, i could help. Here's what i have profiled:
Stranger probably wasn't a stranger, probably someone she new.
it was probably cold and the stranger offered her a ride in his/her heated car.

It seems to me that Justin's brother was not fully investigated, it had to be a family member of Justin's. I went to school with Tina and grew up just down the road from her. I think of her often and wish she could finally have peace in knowing that we caught her killer. Her mother died Ruth died never knowing who killed her only child. It's such a shame that 25 years later, and with what we now know about extensive DNA evidence, that we can't figure this one out? We need to reopen this case and try again. Thank You

I found this tribute to my mother by accident tonight. thank you Nancy for remembering her so accurately.
every day I long for her - "closure" is psychological bs.
I tried hard to keep her safe and was up against a monster I underestimated.
how pleased she would be to know Jesus Christ has given me beauty for ashes ! Isaiah 61:3....or maybe she does know

He was involved with drugs and I know that personally. but it was never anything too serious. there were people around him involved with much worse drugs and gangs. I personally thought it was one person, but he ended up taking his own life a few months afterward and the other person i suspected the police already know about but won't go farther than questioning. the police let this get cold. such a shame for his death to be in vain. someone killed Jared Parks, and that person is still out there laughing at the police department. wow.

hi my born name is Kristin Joe Coker i am the daughter of Judy Weeks.
My mother was a wonderfulll woman full of love and kindness. Yes my mother had some demands she was fighting most of her adult life. She did not deserve to be taken away so violantly and sudden. My brother and I love our mother dearly and do not have any bad feelings for the child hood we had. We want nothing more then to see the person who killed our mother put to justice! Please if anyone has any information please contact detective Larison with the Cedar Rapids police department.

Just wanted to say, I think all of you have done an outstanding job on this site! I thought it was great your site was featured so prominantly on KCRG and I wish KCCI or WHO would do a similar story about cold cases in the DSM area (I'm in the DSM area).

I understand IA Cold Cases is dedicated to IA cases, but have you ever considered making a small section for unidentified children found in our neighboring states? I have done quite a bit of unidentifed persons work, and there are some cases in particular, where the law enforcement has examined all the available potential matches from their area and have come up with only a crime and body, but no name. Please email me if it's even a remote possibility, I would be happy to give you some examples of what I'm talking about. All it takes is one person to break a case and all the unidentified children deserve to have their names back and for justice to be served.

Again, you've done an outstanding job and it's one more thing that makes me proud to say I'm from IA! Thank You! Lisa

Please email me if it’s even a remote possibility, I would be happy to give you some examples of what I’m talking about. All it takes is one person to break a case and all the unidentified children deserve to have their names back and for justice to be served.

Again, you’ve done an outstanding job and it’s one more thing that makes me proud to say I’m from IA! Thank You! Lisa

Jason, tomorrow (March 10) there will be a blog about the victims from the first week in March and it will include this case. If you have information that we can add to the case notes, please send it along. Thanks for your interest in the site.

No mention on Jasper Co's only cold case on the 27th anniversary?

I wish someone would stand up and tell the sheriff what happened.
